It could be either. An elopement to Gretna Green (aka Lydia Bennet) seems fairer for secrecy. If Miss Frances was over 21 she could have married in-country. I do wonder though how hard it would be to keep a ceremony secret. I guess it could happen absent voluntary spies (;D) if they were a ways from MP. I am thinking of the reading of the banns—seven days and then the readings three Sundays in a roll in possibly two parishes. A month is a long time to keep an impending marriage a secret. I like to think if Sir Thomas had known what was in his sister’s heart he would have tried to stop the marriage and it seems if Mrs. Norris had spied an inkling of it her spirit of activity would have driven her to at the very least write a long angry letter. It just seems to me if the family had known beforehand there would have been a bit more drama.
