All very interesting thoughts, but I would like to point out one more nuance: Mrs. Grant, with perspicacity and tactfulness, sees both of their antagonisms growing, and heads it off with the diplomacy of a statesman. A disagreement that would no doubt have ruined everyone's digestion subsides, and the meal can go on in gentility.

I really like Mrs. Grant. Can you tell? ;)
