little hard to understand, since I don't believe that Maria is any intellectual giant. Perhaps a husband with common sense would be just what she really needed. Or did the author write that in such a way that we are to believe he didn't even possess common sense? The way he went on about the improvements he wished to make could show that he lacked sensitivity to the interests of his audience, which could indicate a lack of common sense, or, at least, manners? And I too am confused about the reference to Fanny as infantile, as I see nothing infantile about her.
