I think the arrival of the Crawfords signifies the start of stuff happening at Mansfield. Here we have a large, rather gloomy house with rather unexciting inmates, and along come the Crawfords to shake things up a bit. It certainly seems that Maria and Julia feel that way, and Edmund too. If you feel that way as a reader, it fits, doesn't it?
