|Can Fanny and Mary be friends?

They are obviously very different in personality and character but that has not precluded successful friendships, marriages or partnerships between/among people. There is also the factor of their competition for Edmond's attention. It is a very subtle thing so there is not any real outward conflict. The conflict is something that Fanny is struggling with internally and her demure personality against Mary's witty attractiveness has Fanny on the losing end.
However, her and Edmond's relationship has always been sisterly/brotherly and the introduction of a female interest for Edmond, while pulling him away from Fanny should not necessarily keep Fanny and Mary from being friends. Opposite personalities tend to be complementary, each providing something useful for the other that makes them better.
