Are you new?

I hate to suggest such a thing! But the prior points are really well taken...would MP be a better read if Fanny had started the novel as a woman of spirit instead of a shy, timid, and rather plain young girl?

Anybody have any thoughts on why Austen went this direction with this heroine?
