This actually surprised me quite a lot - I assumed as Erica suggested that Fanny is naturally quiet and withdrawn. But the quote suggests that she took a rather active role amongst her siblings before her removal to Mansfield.

Perhaps her initial shyness at Mansfield Park was due to the grandeur and novelty of the place and people, and later on due to their browbeating her? I wonder if this little glimpse into a different Fanny will be expanded on at all later on?
