But your response triggered yet another idea. Mrs. Norris's idea to take in one of the youngest sister's children could have just been a way for her to(on the one hand) look so very generous by helping her poor, poor sister, and at the same time make sure that there was someone in the household with a rank "even" below hers.

I was thinking - her sister, Lady Bertram, married into a much higher rank, so after Mr. Norris's death, Mrs. Norris was (I guess) quite alone in being the lowest ranking person among the relatives at Mansfield Park. That could of course be easily remedied by bringing one of the lowly price children to MP.
