Amid the cares [] which [her] own children suggested   Written by Stephanie (9/13/2010 11:37 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, What sort of mother would Mrs Norris be? YIKES (NFM), penned by jeffrey
Are you new?

Do not give up Mrs. Norris as a caring, if not gentle, (hypothetical) mother. Parenthood has changed enough of my acquaintance, that I no longer accept it as a mere life change, like a new job, or a relocation to another state.

Mansfield Park hints at that possibility, too:

Had there been a family to provide for, Mrs. Norris might never have saved her money; but having no care of that kind, there was nothing to impede her frugality, or lessen the comfort of making a yearly addition to an income which they had never lived up to.

But since there were no children to soften Mrs. Norris's personality and reorder her priorities, we have this annoying, officious, and unlikable character to scowl at in every page!
