Was 'marines' something like...   Written by Reeba (9/13/2010 7:53 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Promotion in the Marines., penned by Rachel G
Are you new?

the 'Militia'?

Otherwise wouldn't it be called 'the Navy'?

"such as no interest could reach".

I find this statement could have a double meaning.
One meaning-that Sir Thomas wasn't interested enough in *this sort* of profession
-or that even if interested he wouldn't be able to reach any source of help as he didn't know anyone in that position.
I presume you mean the latter.

I had been thinking on the lines of the former interpretation, and thus arrived at the conclusion that 'Marines' must not be as prestigious as the regular navy, and thus even a rank of a liutenent doesn't have much of a future.
The rank of a lieutenant would normally have been one to rise from..I think :-/
