Perhaps the Reverend Norris, when confronted on a daily basis with the poisonous, bullying temperament of his spouse, simply lost whatever enthusiasm he may have had for the business of procreation.

I feel sure that when JA referred to their "conjugal felicity" in the first paragraph of the novel, she did so with her tongue wedged firmly in her cheek.
