in consequence of the missive, Did Mrs. Norris "cause" the breach?, penned by Laurel
No doubt Mrs. Price must bear blame for her ill considered response and the breach but like Rachael G I have a distinct feeling of “but for” Mrs. Norris’ angry letter the breach would not have happened. She might instead have laid the groundwork for Sir Thomas’ interest in the matter, interest which arose from “principle as well as pride—from a general wish of doing right, and a desire of seeing all that were connected with him in situations of respectability” (1) and an interest she must have been aware of as she is a benefactor of it herself. I don’t think Mrs. Norris must bear all the blame for the breach but I think she does deserve to bear some. (:D)
