In JA's time, IIRC, people HAD children, period. There was no alternative, except health, or lack therof (trying to be delicate here). That is why the mortality rate for new mothers was so high. That is how the beloved wife (Elizabeth) of JA's brother, Edward Knight, died. In our time, we can no longer relate to there not being an alternative. So for anyone in this thread who is considering THAT possibility, not just you, Lyzah, although I'm replying here, I'm actually replying to all of you. It's not likely.
