Miss Maria Wards Dowary   Written by Lyzah (9/12/2010 2:02 p.m.)
Are you new?

In this excert in Chapter 1, I find myself perplexed as towards whatever does this mean. In the first few sentence we learn....

About thirty years ago Miss Maria Ward, of Huntingdon, with only seven thousand pounds,......
All Huntingdon exclaimed on the greatness of the match, and her uncle, the lawyer, himself, allowed her to be at least three thousand pounds short of any equitable claim to it.

So being as Miss Maria had seven thousand pounds what does the uncle do with the money and the sum? Did he negotiate it? Was it a fee or settlment?
