As mentioned in other Jane Austen novels and other literature of the regency period, un married sisters, did in fact keep house for their brothers. He would not be required to remain thus with her. In the even of an outing or venture, he could simply depart and no social norm would be broken. I think the key lies either in Mary being difficult or some other issue.
