Well, the oldest child is often the control freak of the family, I know I am! I think Mrs Norris' need for control over her family is even greater because she wasn't able to distinguish herself in society by means of a very good marriage, so she distinguishes herself through her influence over her family members. It seems that a great deal of her self-worth lays in that influence and so when someone like Mrs. Price or Fanny challenges it she goes on the defensive.
