I dont see any signs that Fanny hated her mother. It seems quite clear that she didn't know her as a kid and as she says, when she met her after her marriage to Alfred, they didn't know each other well and it was a bit of a strain. But when she gets to know thte Bolter better during the war, she grows fond of her. As for Linda, Mitford is just offering anothter point of view.. Fanny thinks that Linda and Fab were each other's great loves and their affair would have worked out. But since it was short lived, it wasnt' tested by time. the Bolter tragi comically reminds her that people usually think that each new love affair is the "real thing".
