in consequence of the missive, Never heard much about it but..., penned by Helen Kaye
I finished it the other day, and really enjoyed it! Some parts I felt like Becky was a bit too priggish/preachy (kind of how some people feel about Fanny Price, I think!), but I tried to understand where she was coming from and it worked for me. Loved Felix, and loved their interactions. And, in the end, I think it worked out the way it should have.
I was on Shannon Hale's website the other day, after writing my original post on this board, and she actually has blogged about each of her books, including her motivation for it. She said that people often ask her if it's about her and Colin Firth, and she admits that that's where the idea probably first germinated but it's grown far beyond that. She also discusses ways in which she and Becky are similar and different - says she is not at all intended to be Becky. I thought it was an interesting read.
I ended up recommending this book to friends on facebook, just because I was posting about the effects it had on me (laughing hysterically on the bus on the way to work in the morning, in tears on the bus on the way home). I'll be curious to hear what my friends think of it once they read it; I think it's probably not everybody's cup of tea. But I sure did enjoy it!
