This is the first book in a young adult (?) fantasy series called The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. Fifteen year old twins Josh and Sophie are thrown into the world of mythology and magic when a mysterious stranger, John Dee, appears and steals a book from the owner of the book shop where Josh has a summer job.
The book shop owner turns out to be the immortal Nicholas Flamel, who along with his wife Perenelle, has been guarding the Book of Abraham the Mage for centuries. All is not lost, however, as Josh has inadvertently managed to tear off two important pages from the book before John Dee kidnaps Perenelle and leaves. Josh and Sophie are as much targets as is Flamel, for more reasons than one, and they all have to go on the run in order to rescue Perenelle (a skilled magician in her own right) and retrieve the book, getting help from a variety of interesting people along the way.
What follows is a fast-paced action-packed story with plenty of characters from history and different mythologies cleverly worked into the plot. It is not deep like say, The Lord of the Rings, nor the characters as captivating as the ones in Harry Potter. However, the story seems tightly woven, and I am enjoying the different characters that have been introduced so far. I'm actually on to the second book in the series right now. Highly recommended!
