I remember loving this whole series, but as you say, I read them in my early teens (many years ago!) I don't remember the details you mention, and would have to check them out again. Re the bullying: don't forget that attitudes about bullying have changed considerably since these books were published. The prevailing attitude *used* to be that children needed to learn to deal with bullies on their own ASAP, as a way of learning to deal with real life. In fact, I remember reading an old short story about a boy who would get beaten up by a group of bullies every day on the way home from school. His mother kept urging him to stand up to them and fight back. One day he managed to get back to the safety of his own front door before the bullies caught up with him, but no matter how he pounded on the door, his mother refused to let him in, just standing out of sight behind the kitchen window, watching everything happening. IIRC, the story ended with him "finally" turning to fight his attackers. (And yes, I really do believe that some things have changed for the better since those times!)
