in consequence of the missive, Heyer: The Black Moth (possible spoilers), penned by Jasmine D
I found "The Black Moth" the same way you did. I don't recall it very well, but I thought it was just okay. Is this the story when the young woman is in danger of being assaulted and she is rescued? I recall reading someone's opinion that it was odd how the villain was so easily forgiven for his crimes. I thought so too at the time, but can't remember all the details.
I too saw Heyer mentioned with much affection on Pemberley, and I was truly excited when I started seeing copies of her books in my local bookstore. I had heard her books described as light, fun reads with vivacious, witty heroines, and it sounded like it was tailor made for me. I purchased "The Grand Sophy" first and was...disappointed. I thought perhaps that I had just made a bad choice. I purchased "False Colours" and liked this less. After that I felt that Heyer was not for me. I picked up "Venetia" at a charity book sale without much hope, and I am yet to finish it.
I find the stories long and unncessarily drawn out and the narrative repetitive. Some of the characters strike me as just too smug and I don't like some at all.
I mention all this because I have so rarely found myself in a situation where so many Pemberleans praised something, and I found myself totally on the opposite end in my opinion. I think in my case, Ms Heyer's books are not bad. They just lack a particular appeal for me. I am still disappointed though. I was so excited when I saw she had written so many books, and I expected to have found lots of diverting, romantic books to add to me "To Read" list.
