I am halfway through a lovely, lovely book by Elizabeth Goudge. It is set in the English countryside after WWII. The main character in the book keeps an Austen novel by her bed because she love's Jane's 'cheerful sanity.' When she goes to visit her country neighbors she thinks about how the Bennetts and the Eliots did the same.
This is my fourth Goudge book. I've read two of her children's books The Little White Horse and Linnets and Valerians. I also read Green Dolphin Street and it seems to me the sisters in that book mention reading a Jane Austen book too. though I might be remembering wrongly.
Anyway, it is a very enjoyable book so far and I was ticked by the Austen references.
