My own experience with Jane Austen, though quite recent, had shown that she had important things to teach me. The title and subtitle of the book convinced me that someone else had learned from Austen--a man at that! I wanted to see if this author's experience in any way paralleled my own. It did, but it dug even deeper than I had imagined possible. Deresiewicz's life, values, and behavior became immensely changed by his reading and rereading of Austen novels. My sympathies were with him throughout his growing awareness of his own deficiencies as a cynical, selfish, and isolated young man and the way he began to connect positively with people who became like family for him, including the woman who would become his wife. To his growth as a human being, Deresiewicz tips his hat to authoress and instructress Jane Austen.
