Letter 77 was written November 29-30, 1812 to Martha Lloyd. Martha Lloyd, just to refresh your memories, was the daughter of Martha Craven and Noyes Lloyd, rector of Little Hinton, Wilts. In 1828, Martha Lloyd became the second wife of Frank Austen.. Her sister Mary became the second wife of James Austen in 1797. After Revd Lloyd's death in 1789, his widow and daughters Martha and Mary lived in George Austen's parsonage at Deane, moving in 1792 to Ibthorpe. Hence her friendship with the Austens.
When Jane Austen wrote this letter, Martha Lloyd was at Barton Court near Kintbury in Berkshire with her friend, Mrs. Dundas, who died there on December 1. The Mrs. D. D. referred to is Mrs. Dundas's daughter, Mrs. Deans Dundas.
