|Letter 76 and 77: Third and First Person

Was there a special rule in JA's time about when a letter writer should write in third person or first person? When writing to Anna, she uses third person; but when writing to Martha, she writes in first person. Is that because her note to Anna is shorter? Or was it customary to give thanks in third person? Or was Jane more intimate with Martha because they both lived at Chawton?
