I'm glad you raised this point Robbin - I also picked up the sense that JA loathed the thought of being obliged to spin with Mrs Lloyd's unwelcome gift. It fell out of my post altogether while I was tying myself up in knots trying to convey the contrasts I see in JA's character - her fierce intelligence and clarity of perception combined with fundamental kindness and consideration. I'm still not expressing it to my own satisfaction - it has been an unusually busy week and I think my brain needs a rest!
