More about the expression "Born to be hanged":

It was indeed used to describe the eponymous hero of "Tom Jones." I've put a link below to the relevant passage in Fielding's novel.

I also found posts in the L&T Archives which say that this novel was in the Rev Austen's library, and that JA discussed it with Tom Lefroy.

So I think that JA's use of the expression in Letter 71 is probably a literary allusion to "Tom Jones", and not at all as horrible as it first appears.
