An error or slip of Author Austen's perhaps? But I confess that assumption does not clarify it for me, even if correct. "Beth, my be..." "Bed, my be..." "Bet, (that) may be (I've) not come to bide." Maybe she is teasing him for a childish pronounciation of 'bed' with that 'bide?' "Bet, my be not come to bed."

*silver shrugs* Oh, well, another question to ask Author Austen, should I be fortunate enough to meet her through time travel or in the afterlife! (I shall of course, report back any interesting findings...)
