This might be even more of a joke, for I think I read on the Life and Times board that a gentleman was not supposed to even acknowledge an acquaintance with a lady when passing on the street unless she acknowledged it first! So, of course, Jane Austen would have to stop him, rather than waiting for him to see and recognize her...
