Delineating character.   Written by Rachel G (8/20/2011 6:25 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Letter 70 (Brabourne 55), penned by Myretta
Are you new?

Letter 70 has a couple of lovely examples of JA's talent for pithy characterisation:

"Theo. ..... came back in time to show his usual nothing-meaning, harmless, heartless civility."

and - "Miss Beaty is good-humour itself, and does not seem much besides."

This is something JA did supremely well, IMO. It is the verbal equivalent of a talented artist who can conjure the appearance and character of a person with a few rapidly sketched pencil lines.
