I really love the little snippets we get from reports of newspaper articles. I feel they add insight above and beyond the goings-on in Austen's circle of family and friends. We get a little microcosm, an added layer of life as it were. I can't help wondering about the 'poor Mad Woman, escaped from Confinement' and about how mental illness was handled at this time. I assume that this is what is being referred to here. I have a feeling that women, in particular, might have been sometimes labeled 'mad' when they were maybe only eccentric, quirky, or just plain feisty, not easily adapting to the conservative reigns of a controlling husband. Any thoughts on this?
