I'm always collecting clues about JA's real attitude towards marrying for love vs. convenience. In letter 63, she wrote:
"Lady Sondes' match surprises, but does not offend me; had her first marriage been of affection, or had there been a grown-up single daughter, I should not have forgiven her; but I consider everybody as having a right to marry once in their lives for love, if they can, and provided she will now leave off having bad headaches and being pathetic, I can allow her, I can wish her, to be happy."
Of course, JA was partly joking, as usual, but I find it interesting that she wrote that everyone has a right to marry for love once in their lives (kind of a sad comment, if you think about it). I wonder why having a grown-up single daughter would have made Lady Sondes' remarriage less acceptable...
P.S: I sympathize with the wish for LS to "leave off being pathetic" but I find the remark about "bad headaches" rather hard. JA obviously felt they were psychosomatic. What if Lady Sondes suffered from migraines?
