I think it was a comfort for Jane to hear, whether Elizabethīs countenance looked peacefully. It would have given her the assurance, that her suffering hadnīt been too severe.

As Kathleen said, this practice is still known today and I can tell from my own experience, it was a comfort even to my children (aged six to nine at that time), when they could say "good-bye" to their deceased grandpa that way.
