12 days   Written by Elizabeth K (1/31/2010 2:47 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, All the more heartbreaking, penned by Isabelle M
Are you new?

It was injudicious of me not to think about the length of time that elapsed between the birth and Elizabeth's death - I immediately thought of puerperal fever as a possible cause, but as you rightly point out, it would probably not be likely for this to strike nearly two weeks after Elizabeth gave birth. As medical diagnosis of the time was not as it is today, I suppose we will never know.

As other posters have commented, Fanny attracts sympathy. Poor girl! At only fifteen, to be landed with the responsibility of caring for ten younger brothers and sisters.
