According to the notes in the Le Faye edition, "It was the custom of the period for relatives to take a last farewell look at the body before the coffin was closed prior to the funeral." The notes do not say, but I assume this was in the home.

People still have viewings today, though not in the home -- usually at the mortuary, in my experience.
