Too distressed?   Written by Isabelle M (1/31/2010 1:47 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Not attend the funeral?, penned by MarianneR

I understood it to mean they hoped he would not attend, possibly because he was too distressed, but I'm not sure, either. Sometimes people are so grieved that it is physically impossible to attend the funeral of a loved one. They simply can not bear it.

Wasn't it for a similar reason that women traditionnally did not attend funerals? they were considered too weak to behave with dignity in these occasions.
