An ominous sight for Jane.   Written by Mandy N (1/30/2010 1:50 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Fire!, penned by Elizabeth K
Are you new?

'The Flames were considerable: they seemed about as near to us as those at Lyme & to reach higher...'

I receive an impression Jane writes of this fire and it's consequences in a calm, almost reserved manner-'One could not but feel uncomfortable'- was she be in shock ? Maybe she didn't want to alarm Cassandra.
With high flames so close, I'd feel threatened !
However, it did not come to the worst, I agree. The Webbs were probably in frenzy, throwing down the china.
Jane mentions no loss of life and the house in Castle Square escaped the high flames... With the fire, a 'worst' was avoided for generations of JA readers- I cannot imagine which manuscripts Jane may've had time to save.
What MS may've been lost !?

Thanks for the link on fire fighting- Jane fans may be indebted to those engines.
