Maybe a pen-knife? Written by nan duval (1/27/2010 7:07 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, A silver knife, penned by Isabelle M

I think they're like jack-knives & able to be kept in your pocket for sharpening your quills for writing things--like letters. It would be a useful implement & if in silver an elegant accessory.

I think children grew up handling a lot of things that have an ick factor for us moderns as we see them more as weapons than tools.
