Newbury races   Written by Myretta (1/26/2010 11:36 a.m.)

Are you new?

I was interested in the mention of the Newbury races. According to the Newbury Racecourse web site, "The first recorded racing at Newbury took place in 1805 with ‘Newbury Races’, an annual two day race meeting at Enborne Heath. The meeting lasted until 1811 when it transferred to Woodhay Heath until 1815."

And HERE is the racing calendar for Newbury in 1808.

I never much imagined Jane and Cassandra attending the races, but there you go.

The picture above is the bay filly Molly Longlegs painted by George Stubbs. She retired from racing in 1762
