'At half-past ten we were off again travellling on without any adventure till we reached Sittingbourne by three' & mention of breakfasting and 'bad butter'... reminds me of Catherine Morland's tedious halt at Petty-France on route to Nothanger-'in which there was nothin to be done but to eat without being hungry, and loister about without anything to see'.(ch. 20) NA.

Butter exposed to light or dark tends to turn bad, the phrase 'about the same bad butter' may indicate typical food travellers at Georgian inns were used to.
