Legacy   Written by Barbara (1/24/2010 11:39 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I agree -- very real and very intimate, penned by kathleen (elder)
Are you new?

Had the Bridges recently inherited money from someone? Or did they regularly receive money, like an annuity, from some family will? I know Edward's wife had been well-to-do. I think the comment could be read as both sarcastic and wistful, in the sense that yes, it is easier to make oneself look good when one has a lot of money to spend on one's appearance.

It makes the comment about Edward's wife Elizabeth not looking well all the more sad. She, too, certainly could afford to make herself look good. But constantly being pregnant in those days (as she is again when Jane writes this letter) would have taken its toll on anyone's looks.
