Some background   Written by Myretta (1/24/2010 10:04 a.m.)
Are you new?

No letters survive from early 1808. Jane and Cassandra were together during that time, paying visits at Steventon and Manydown (in Hampshire) before going to Kintbury (Berkshire) at the end of February.

In May, Jane stayed with Henry at his house at Brompton in London before joining her brother James, his wife and their two younger children to travel to her brother Edward's home in Godmersham.

The early part of these letters are from Jane at Godmersham to Cassandra at home in Southampton.

As most of the activity takes place in Kent and Hampshire, I've prepared maps of both counties with pointers to most of the locations mentioned. I hope you'll find them helpful as we read through these letters.
