George Austens Compass and Sun Dial   Written by Julie W (Monday, 12 January 2009, at 6:03 a.m.)
Are you new?

Mr Austen made his will in 1770,and never altered it. He left everything to his wife and she was to be its sole executrix.

JA sent Frank a sundial/compass and a small pair of scissors. Very practical gifts but for a sailor the compass and sun dial had more personal siginificance,I submit.

Here is an example of the type of instrument JA sent to Frank, just for ilustrative purposes. This is a late 18th century compass and sundial made of ivory.
