In her Dec. 1798 letter (Letter 15) Jane refers to attending a ball '-My black Cap was openly admired by Mrs Lefroy, & secretly I imagine by everyone else...', so I think Jane may've been rather pleased with her own black Cap !

I think Jane's using 'setting my black cap' for word play.
I doubt black caps had spinisterly connotations.
