Jane's books...   Written by Mandy N (9/20/2007 1:07 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Letter 37: The Detestible Mr Bent., penned by JulieW
Are you new?

Yet another disappointment for Jane; the devaluation of books she had read since childhood.
Her father's books may've been an influence in encouraging Jane's early writing; Her first impulse was to write stories for her family's amusement from books which had entertained them.- Golding's History of England for which Cass. drew the pictures; Mrs Radcliffe yet what other women authors ?
Jane also wrote a play based on Richardson's Sir Charles Grandison and 3 mini-dramas... interesting to know the particular plays the Austenfamily read and enjoyed which the children performed with their home theatricals.
If I remember correctly, Anna Austen was a favourite niece of Jane & Cass. I'm glad she received Jane's copy of the
Elegant Extracts Perhaps it gave Jane abit of control over something she cherished.

Not difficult to see which part of the family was being enriched and who impoverished.
