Letter 37 : A Disciple of Godwin   Written by JulieW (9/20/2007 9:12 a.m.)
Are you new?

The Pickfords are in Bath, and have called here. She is the most elegant-looking woman I have seen since I left Martha; he is as raffish in his appearance as I would wish every disciple of Godwin to be.

We are not sure exactly who the Pickfords are, but that JA did not exactly approve of him at least seems certain.

So who was Godwin? Well,as a follower of him Mr Pickford seems to have been quite the radical....

William Godwin was born on March 3, 1756, at Wisbech in Cambridgeshire

He was a social philosopher, political journalist, and religious dissenter :his writings advanced atheism, anarchism, and personal freedom.

Not really JA's cup of tea, don't you think? Hence her comment.

Lots more information about Godwin out there, but its probalby best for the preservation of ROP guidelines that I stop here.......;-)
