I wondered what JA was implying in letter 31 when she wrote:

Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlayne are in Bath, lodging at the Charitable Repository; -- I wish the scene may suggest to Mrs. C. the notion of selling her black beaver bonnet for the relief of the poor.

Who were the Chamberlaynes, why were they lodging at a place called the Charitable Repository, and didn't JA like Mrs. C's black beaver bonnet (or perhaps she considered it too pretentious)?
