Letter 32 : Shades of Persuasion   Written by JulieW (9/17/2007 8:14 a.m.)
Are you new?

I join with you in wishing for the environs of Laura Place, but do not venture to expect it. My mother hankers after the Square dreadfully, and it is but natural to suppose that my uncle will take her part.

I wonder if the mention of Queen's Square in Persuasion is an echo of Mrs Austen's lamentations?

"I hope we shall be in Bath in the winter; but remember, papa, if we do go, we must be in a good situation: none of your Queen-squares for us!" or in the anxious supplement from Mary, of "Upon my word, I shall be pretty well off, when you are all gone away to be happy at Bath!"

Chapter 6

Of course, Edward Austen stayed there -along with his family and JA- in our last section of the leters. Here is a post I made about it then..

I really do think that JA inserted a lot of in-jokes in her novels. And I consider Mrs Austens partiality for The Square was reflected by the Musgrove seniors choice too :-)
