Letter 30: Bones bleaching in the Sun   Written by Line (9/16/2007 8:27 p.m.)
Are you new?

In letter 30, JA wrote about a Mrs. Laurel marrying a Mr. Hinchman, and then added:

I hope Mary will be satisfied with this proof of her cousin's Existence & Welfare, & cease to torment herself with the idea of his bones being bleaching in the Sun on Wantage Downs.

I'm rather confused: can anyone tell me who Mary's cousin was, and what the significance of Wantage Downs was that JA would joke about them?
