Life at Steventon , a small Hampshire village ,was pleasant for JA.
I thougth I ought to try and set the secene for you to let you see was like to contrast it ,with the images we all know of Georgian Bath.
This is Cary's map of Hamsphire from his Travellers Companion and Itinerary of 1812.
This is a close up of the area where JA lived:
You can clearly make out Basingstoke and Overton on the plan,I trust. Steventon itself is too small to be noted on the map.
It had , in the Census of 1801 a popluation of 153 people who lived in 20 houses.
Here is a picture of Steventon Rectory, which.I trust you will agree , is not quite the palatial pile as depicted in a recent movie bio of JA ;-)
Bath by contrast, in the same census, had a populaton of 27,686.
Here is a map of Bath and its environs again by Carey dating from 1812.
It was a vast connurbation by comparison with the village of Steventon and its surrounding county towns.
That's an overwhelming difference, don't you think?
